This year’s Thorn Creek Habitat Improvement Project wrapped up on Sunday, August 4, 2019 with the planting of 200 live stakes of native riparian shrub species on the newly installed habitat devices. During the two week construction period, work crews from the CWA, PA Fish and Boat Commission, Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, CN Railroad, Penn Township, and Phil Hay and Sons Excavating installed over 1400 feet of instream habitat devices. These devices included 25 sections of mud sill, 3 root wad deflectors, 7 log frame deflectors and a log cross vane. All of these devices will serve to stabilize the stream bank, provide overhead cover, and move pressure from the primary water current away from eroding stream banks.
My name is Paul Cornetti. I am an environmental engineer serving several water and wastewater governmental entities in our area. One of my clients, Harmony Borough Water Authority asked that I reach out to discuss a potential project with you. There is a current acid mine blowout that is flowing into the Semiconon Run. The Semiconon is tributary to the Little Connoquenessing Creek, which is tributary to the Connoquenessing Creek. Would the CWA have any interest in becoming a partner/applicant to apply for Growing Greener grant funding to construct an iron treatment wetland at the discharge of the mine blowout? In discussions with the DEP, we have learned that the 501C designation is important for grant funding. Thank you!
