Ongoing/Upcoming Events

bulletRiversweep 2010 - http://www.orsanco.org/index.php/rivers-sweep/  The current Riversweep for the Ohio Valley (sponsored by Orsanco and supported by PADEP) is scheduled for June 19, 2010.  The annual cleanup started in 1989 and has involved 21,000 volunteers per year.  If you are interested in participating, call 1.800.359.3977.  The previous River Sweeps in Butler were great successes.  THANK YOU to the wonderful volunteers who worked so hard.  We filled a 10 cubic yard dumpster and two pickup trucks full of trash which Waste Management properly disposed in 2007 with similar results in 2007.  Photos below.

This work is supported by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (http://www.depweb.state.pa.us/dep/site/default.asp keyword "river sweep") .

bulletEcoli testing in the watershed - contact nativenatalie@zoominternet.net if you are interested in participating.  Please put "ecoli" in the subject line. The 2004 final report may be accessed here:  Monitoring Bacteria in the Streams May 2006  You must have Adobe Acrobat Reader (http://adobe.com/products/acrobat).  The 2005 report is in progress.
bulletRegional environmental cleanup progress status is available at http:www.butlerwebs.com/petroleumvalley/water.htm.  Of particular interest to Petrolia Valley residents for the numerous cleanup actions ongoing.
bulletWater quality monitoring - ongoing monthly.  Contact the webmaster (GeoBarbara554@cs.com) if you are interested in participating.  For results, see the Water Quality Monitoring page of this website (menu at left). Live input for members in progress.
bulletMacroinvertebrate surveys - assessing the health of the watershed by surveying (collecting, counting and identifying) the aquatic (lives in water) macroinvertebrate (think no backbone (fish need not apply as they have backbones) and large enough to see) population. These are fun - basically take a bucket of creek water and pull out the bugs and bug larvae just to say HI! while you identify and count them.  These surveys give us a measure of how healthy the watershed is in terms of the diversity of aquatic life.
bulletPA Cleanways of Butler and Lawrence Counties will be conducting household hazardous waste collection for 2010 later in the Summer.  Details upcoming.  Keep in touch at http://www.pacleanways.org/lawrence.
